The main word list is ENABLE (Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon), compiled by Alan Beale and M. Cooper and released into the public domain. A short list of modern additions, each checked individually, is added to it.

Word frequency — English Speller Database
A frequency list generated from the English Speller Database is used to choose familiar words for puzzles and to order some lists. It adds no words to the site. It is used under this notice:
